Our Story

Poppy Jar Flowers specializes in raising locally grown specialty cut flowers and delivering custom bouquets and arrangements straight to you! We start by searching for the highest quality and most unique floral varieties available, then we use all-natural organic growing methods to raise our flowers from seed to bloom, and finally we prepare beautiful floral arrangements that will bring joy to your home, business, or event!

My name is Cristina, and my husband Josh and I started Poppy Jar Flowers as a couple of city kids whose hearts kept pulling us back to the country. Don’t get us wrong, we love the energy of the city, where we both are full-time practicing attorneys. But it’s the serenity and fresh air of the countryside that keep us in balance and give our two little boys the joy of growing up surrounded by nature.

Enter the Eastern Shore of Maryland and the little short-sale cottage that changed our lives forever. After years of weekend getaways enjoying the country coastal beauty of Talbot County, Maryland, we daydreamed about owning our own piece of paradise. Then one day, a cute little home came on the market that was badly in need of TLC but that offered a stunning row of peony bushes in front. Peonies?? Sold! I texted Josh the listing the minute I saw it, and after a few months of “Are we really doing this??” we found ourselves the proud new owners of a weekend home on the Shore.

The first spring and summer at the cottage, we planted flowers anywhere we could find space—restoring old flower beds and building a couple of new ones. To our happy surprise, pretty much anything we placed into the fertile Eastern Shore soil grew into blooming beauties. Our living room, kitchen, bedrooms, and even bathrooms were brimming with cut flower arrangements, and we still had stems to spare. So we started to give away bouquets to family and friends.

And that’s when we discovered that our true passion is watching a tiny seed grow into something beautiful that brings joy to others.

We started Poppy Jar Flowers so that we could share this joy with even more people. What began as a couple of varieties in two small flower beds has grown into an encyclopedia of flowers and a new raised bed every couple of weeks, with thousands and thousands of stems each season. We’re a family operation, and while Josh and I do most of the heavy lifting, we couldn’t be happier that the boys enjoy helping out too.

It wasn’t long before we had outgrown our growing space at the cottage—and grown to love life on the Shore so much that we took the leap and moved full-time to a new property in Saint Michaels in 2020. With more than triple the growing area, we are excited to share even more beautiful blooms with you!
